Gibraltar Walk consists of a row of small industrial terraced buildings located at the north end of Brick Lane in Shoreditch. These buildings were historically occupied by small scale labour intensive workshops, including furniture makers. The interior of each building is spread across four levels.
13 Gibraltar Walk was to be converted to house the offices and archives of a photographer. We sought to expose the internal volumes and materiality of the original workshop spaces, set against the new use as an office work space. Double height volumes, exposed cast iron and brickwork give the once squat interiors a sense of verticality, topped with a large roof light. Work spaces and storage become intertwined depending on whether the function is working at a desk or studying prints on a lightbox.
