SITE

Kingswood Avenue is a broad, double-fronted house located on the edge of Queen’s Park. The house features a central hallway flanked by formal living rooms. At the rear, an unusual central closet wing creates two narrow alleyways to either side, resulting in a fragmented and underutilised layout.

CLIENT

The clients sought to transform the house into a functional family home while maintaining its formal character. The objective was to restore the front living rooms to their original state while creating a cohesive and inviting family space within the rear closet wing.

CONCEPT

The design centres on addressing the unusual closet wing and alleyways at the rear of the house. The solution involved a thoughtful extension that combined all these elements into a single, broad family room. To preserve the sense of the outdoor spaces, glass roofs were installed over the alleyways, allowing natural light to flood the new family room while retaining the impression of being outside. The closet wing was retained as a distinct, prominent architectural form, particularly when viewed from the garden. The result is a new family room that complements the formal interior, offering a modern, open counterpart to the more traditional, restored spaces.
